I’m going to be doing something a little different with my blog. Not only will I be providing weekly freebies on Tuesdays, I also will have two other days of the week where I discuss other things: mommy life, and books.
Today is a mix of both.
Though I am an author, I am also a reader. And as a mom, I read a lot to escape the insanity of parenthood, which leads me to my latest obsession: A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy) by Deborah Harkness.

This series is simply amazing. The author has a way of capturing her audience with beautiful words and captivating characters, not to mention, I’m positive there isn’t one thing this author doesn’t know. Her historical knowledge is simply tasty. That’s all there is to it. If I would have read this before I went to college, I would have gone to school to be a history major, and before reading this series, history wasn’t my thing.
She makes the reader wish they could time travel back to the Elizabethan era in the second book, not to mention wishing that Matthew Clairmont was real and for the taking, married woman or not (haha).
I felt a real kinship toward Diana Bishop and at every turn in the book, I found myself relating to her. Each character has appropriate flaws, as well as amazing strengths.
Now, mind you, I listened to these books in audio version, and since picking them up, I’ve listened to them four times. Nope. I’m not embarrassed about that.
The audio version is spectacular – the narrator, Jennifer Ikeda can seriously act. She can throw her voice to make her tone sound male and every single accent known to human kind. She can even sound like a child when the need arises.
Magically, each character had their own distinct voice, tone, and accent. That’s very hard to come by in audio narrators, and I’ve listened to quite a few: mommies don’t have a lot of reading time when we’re working busy bees.
To top it all off, she has a TV SERIES out. This just hit the US, and you can find the full 8 episodes of the first book on Shudder.com. I am currently watching it – binging is more like it – and have two more episodes to go. As all shows and movies made from books, it’s not exactly the same as what we’ve read, but it is still just as delightful to ‘see it in person,’ after reading it, especially the historical structures that were difficult to picture since I’ve never studied them myself.
Someday, I will travel to these historical structures and view them for myself.
Read the book. I haven’t found anyone who has regretted picking it up.
